MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 12, 2015) – Mayor Jenny Selin joined U.S. Cellular (NYSE: USM) and the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club to announce the winners of the Black History Month Art contest at a special ceremony at the club’s campus at the former Woodburn Elementary School’s Campus. The contest, now in its 6th year, is designed to honor influential African-Americans and inspire students’ creativity and knowledge of these heroes.

“I am impressed with the originality and talent of the artwork,” said Mayor Selin. “I will enjoy the event again this year and spending time with the children.”

Members of the club were invited to select an influential African-American and develop his or her likeness into an original 8.5 x 11 portrait using any art medium. The top 10 finalists’ entries were on display at area U.S. Cellular stores in Clarksburg, Morgantown, and Fairmont where the public voted for their favorites during the month of February:

• Second Place – Deangelo Turner, 3rd Grade, from Eastwood Elementary for his portrait of Martin Luther King Jr.
• Third Place – Darion Turner, 1st Grade from Eastwood Elementary for his portrait of Martin Luther King Jr.

“We enjoyed sharing the artwork with the community to celebrate our rich heritage, culture and diversity,” said Linda Click, area sales manager for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-South, “Our store associates had so much fun seeing the artwork and sharing it with community members that came in to vote.”

“Our partnership with U.S. Cellular, and this program is something that the children of the club look forward to every year,” said Denny Poluga, executive director of the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club. “They get involved in the process of learning and it puts the focus on exploring and promoting our history, and engaging them in art.”
