Voting Begins in UScellular’s 14th Annual Black History Month Art Contest

Voting is open in UScellular's 14th annual Black History Month Art Contest with Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia. For the first time, voting is available online, and artwork from members in the Roanoke, Salem, Rocky Mount, Christiansburg, Shawsville, and Eastern Montgomery communities is represented.  Residents can visit uscellular/artcontest to vote for their favorite piece of original art. In January, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia members created artwork in recognition of influential Black people from around the globe, including historical figures, world leaders, athletes and celebrities. The 10 finalists were chosen by representatives from the Boys & Girls Club and local UScellular leaders based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. Voting will remain open through Feb. 28, and anyone 18 or older can vote once for their favorite. The top three vote-getters will be announced in March and prizes include gift

U.S. Cellular announced today that the top 10 drawings in the company’s 13th annual Black History Month Art Competition with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia are now on display in local retail stores. The public is encouraged to visit select local U.S. Cellular stores to vote on their favorite piece of artwork. In January, Boys & Girls Clubs members created original 8.5 x 11 pieces of artwork in recognition of influential African-Americans, including business people, athletes, historical figures and celebrities. The 10 finalists’ artwork were chosen by representatives from the Boys & Girls Club based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. Winners Determined by Local Community Votes ROANOKE/CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. –U.S. Cellular and the Boys & Girls Clubs in Southwest Virginia kicked off the 9 th annual Black History Month Art Contest, which honors the many contributions of African-Americans and encourages young people to learn more about these current and historic influencers in January.   During that time, Boys & Girls Club members were encouraged to research and learn more about African-American role models and their important contributions to society. They were invited to create and submit an original 8.5 x 11 portraits representing the figure of their choice using any art medium from any point in history, including present day.
