Black History Month Art Contest Winners Announced in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. (March 5, 2015) –U.S. Cellular (NYSE: USM), The Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg announced the winners of the Second Annual U.S. Cellular Black History Month Art contest at a special ceremony at the club located at 1101 Madison Street in Lynchburg March 4. The contest is designed to honor influential African-Americans and inspire students’ creativity and knowledge of these heroes. Laverne Brown, director of communications for the chamber, served as the master of ceremonies.

Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lynchburg were invited to select an influential African-American and develop his or her likeness into an original 8.5 x 11 portrait using any art medium. The top 10 finalists’ entries were on display at area U.S. Cellular stores where the public voted for their favorites during the month of February.


The winners are:


· First Place – Isaiah Goode, age 15, from Heritage High School, who won a $500 gift card for a portrait of Malcolm X.

· Second Place –Esther Yocum, age 13, from Dunbar Middle School, who won a $200 gift card for a portrait of Rosa Parks.

· Third Place –AJ Clark, age 15, from EC Glass High School, who won a $150 gift card for a portrait of Barak Obama.



“We enjoy working with the Lynchburg community to celebrate our rich heritage, culture and diversity,” says Bertram Daniels, area sales manager for U.S. Cellular.


“This is a great program that the children became totally engaged in again this year,” said Mark Sheehan, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg, “Empowering programs like this one allow our students to explore history and their creativity at the same time. We’re already looking forward to next year!”
