MARTINSVILLE, Va. (March 9, 2016) – Mayor Danny Turner joined U.S. Cellular (NYSE: USM) and The Boys & Girls Clubs of The Blue Ridge to announce the winners of the Black History Month Art contest at a special ceremony at the Teen Center at 603 Memorial Blvd. in Martinsville March 8. The contest, the first ever for the area, is designed to honor influential African-Americans and inspire students’ creativity and knowledge of these heroes.

“I really enjoyed seeing how talented and creative our Martinsville children are,” said Mayor Turner, “I was really impressed by the artwork and how it represents our diverse history and community.”

Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge were invited to select an influential African-American and develop his or her likeness into an original 8.5 x 11 portrait using any art medium. This year the Clubs received numerous entries from which the top 10 finalists were chosen. The top 10 finalists’ entries were on display at area U.S. Cellular stores Martinsville where the public voted for their favorites during the month of February:

”Programs and partnerships like these from U.S. Cellular promote great opportunities for children to learn about history and become engaged in the learning process at the same time.” said Boys & Girls Clubs Executive Director Bethann West James. “We appreciate U.S. Cellular’s partnership with our Clubs and their support of our kids and community.”
