U.S. Cellular Announces Plans to Bring Wireless Service to
Paw Paw, West Virginia

Paw Paw, W. Va. (June 16, 2015) – U.S. Cellular (NYSE: USM) today announced plans to bring high-quality wireless voice and broadband service to the residents of Paw Paw, W. Va. The company is the first wireless carrier to provide service for the town, and a new tower in the area will be one of more than 205 sites U.S. Cellular has built across the state.

“At U.S. Cellular, we focus on providing the best wireless experience for our customers, and we are pleased to announce these new broadband network plans for the Paw Paw community,” said Ken Meyers, president and chief executive officer for U.S. Cellular.

Earlier this year, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) initiated the search for a carrier, asking U.S. Cellular to address the lack of broadband access for Paw Paw residents, and highlighting the benefits that the community will receive by having access to the same level of telecommunication services residents in more populated areas receive. The company then investigated its implementation options and recently began the process of deploying high-speed broadband service.

“This increase in our network coverage will be paid for under the Federal Universal Service Program, which unfortunately is dramatically underfunded. There are a great many other Paw Paws out there in rural areas suffering from the same lack of access to modern wireless telecommunication services,” Meyers added. “We hope this project will highlight the additional benefits that broadband brings to rural communities and that the Federal Communications Commission will recognize the continuing need for the fund.”

Pending the outcome of the tower siting deployment process, U.S. Cellular anticipates offering service in Paw Paw sometime in the first quarter of 2016.

“Cell phone and internet access is critical to live, work and compete in today’s economy and marketplace,” said Senator Capito. “Small communities across West Virginia lack this fundamental infrastructure and lack access to vital opportunities as a result. This announcement is great news for jobs and growth in the Eastern Panhandle, and I was happy to help make it a reality.”

In 2014, U.S. Cellular invested $11.4 million in network enhancements across West Virginia. This was a combination of 4G LTE enhancements and upgrades to the company’s existing high-speed network.
