U.S. CELLULAR, MAYOR DAVID BOWERS AND THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SW VIRGINIA ANNOUNCE BLACK HISTORY MONTH ART CONTEST WINNERS
ROANOKE/CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. -- Mayor David
Bowers joined U.S. Cellular (NYSE :
USM) and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia to announce the winners
of the Black History Month Art contest at a special ceremony March 10 at the
club’s Ninth Street location in Roanoke. The contest, now in its seventh year,
is designed to honor influential African-Americans
and inspire students’ creativity and knowledge of these
heroes.
“I like
this contest because it actively engages children in learning and expressing
themselves while celebrating our diversity and culture,” said Mayor David
Bowers. “These children are the future rock stars, role models, inventers and
innovators in our community, and you can’t help but be inspired by their portraits
every year.”
Members
of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia were invited to select an
influential African-American and develop his or her likeness into an original
8.5 x 11 portrait using any art medium. This year the club received more than 300
entries from eight area clubs from which the top 10 finalists were chosen. The
top 10 finalists’ entries were on display at area U.S. Cellular stores where
the public voted for their favorites during the month of February:
The
winners are:
· First Place –
Christian Berry, an 8th Grader from Christiansburg Middle School won
a $500 gift card for his portrait of Jackie Robinson.
· Second Place –
Tyshawn Walker, an 11th Grader from William Flemming High School won
a $200 gift card for a portrait of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.
· Third Place
– Daniel Ettah, a 6th Grader from Woodrow Wilson Middle School won a
$150 gift card for a portrait of Jackie Robinson.
“We are
thrilled to join with the Southwest Virginia community each year to celebrate
our rich heritage, culture and diversity,” says Bertram Daniels, area sales manager
for U.S. Cellular. “Our store associates have so much fun seeing the artwork
and sharing it with community members that come in to vote.”
“Companies such
as U.S. Cellular help us promote active learning programs that provide hands on
projects that children remember,” said Laurie E. Gibbons, chief professional
officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia. “Each year the
children look forward to this program, and they start preparing and researching
who they might draw. In the past seven years, we’ve been able to
impact almost 2,000 area children, and to me that is amazing!”
