 U.S. CELLULAR’S BLACK HISTORY MONTH ART CONTEST TO HONOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN HEROES

Local Residents Choose Winners by Viewing and Voting for Their Favorite Portraits Feb.3-28

LYNCHBURG, Va.  (Jan. 28, 2014) – U.S. Cellular is pleased to announce that it will partner with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg for a Black History Month Art Contest, which honors the many contributions of African-Americans and encourages young people to learn more about these influencers.

"U.S. Cellular is committed to providing educational opportunities for children to celebrate our rich and diverse culture and we are so excited to partner with the Lynchburg club this year," said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-South. "Through this contest, we're able to celebrate and reward children in our local communities for their artwork and creativity, while simultaneously honoring a host of African-American leaders."

In January, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg members researched African-American role models and their important contributions to society and then created and submitted original 8.5 x 11 portraits representing the figure of their choice using any art medium from any point in history, including present day.  The top 10 finalists’ entries, chosen by a panel from the Boys & Girls Club, are displayed at local U.S. Cellular stores, where the public will be invited to view and vote on the artwork from February 3 to 28. The top three artists - as determined by the number of votes - will receive prizes:  $500 for first place, $200 for second and $150 for third place and recognition at an upcoming U.S. Cellular event held at the Boys & Girls Club.

“We have clubs full of talented children with sharp minds and ideas waiting for expression, and this contest provides them with a fun way to create, learn and grow,” said Mark Sheehan, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg. “We’re so pleased to be partnering with U.S. Cellular this year.”
