U.S. Cellular, Mayor Jim Manilla and the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club Announce the Winners of the 3rd Annual Black History Month Art Contest

Mayor Jim Manilla joined U.S. Cellular and the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club Monday, March 12, to announce the winners of the carrier’s 3rd Annual Black History Month Art Contest at the Boys & Girls Club at 300 Court Street in Morgantown, W.Va.

“This contest is a creative way for us to celebrate our rich and diverse culture with Morgantown children,” said Mayor Manilla. “I am happy to be part of this year’s celebration and am delighted to announce the winners.”

During the month of February, club members were invited to select an influential African- American and develop his or her likeness into an original 8.5 x 11 portrait using any art medium. The top 10 finalists’ entries were on display during February at area U.S. Cellular stores where the public voted for their favorites.

“U.S. Cellular is proud to offer activities that create educational opportunities for children that celebrate our rich and diverse culture,” said Dee Taylor, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-Atlantic. “Every year we continue to be impressed by the amazing works of art these children create and this year is definitely not an exception.”

The winners of this year’s contest are:
  • First Place – Miah Kaehler from South Middle School in Morgantown won a $500 gift certificate for a portrait of Michelle Obama.
  • Second Place – Rohan Bowen from South Middle School in Morgantown won a $200 gift certificate for a portrait of Martin Luther King.
  • Third Place (tie) – There was a tie for third place. Angel Rodriguez from Mountainview Elementary School and Gavin Jackson from Woodburn Elementary School each won $75 gift certificates for their portraits of Martin Luther King.
“We are thankful to have a community partner and advocate and like U.S. Cellular to celebrate Black History Month.  Programs like this help our children explore and dream of what greatness can look like.  The children find this both a rewarding and fun experience every year,” said Malina Alexander, assistant director for the Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club.

Since the program’s inception three years ago hundreds of Boys & Girls Club members have participated in the contest and the club received numerous submissions before narrowing the field to the final 10 contestants. In addition, U.S. Cellular would like to congratulate the winners by displaying their artwork in the stores during the month of March.
