U.S. Cellular Invites Residents to Vote for Black History Month Artwork

U.S. Cellular, Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Virginia, and Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club have teamed up to hold the 5th Annual Black History Month Art Program. The program honors the many contributions of African-Americans and encourages creativity among young people. The competition invited Boys & Girls Clubs members to select an influential African-American and develop his or her likeness into an original 8.5 x 11 portrait using any art medium.

“At U.S. Cellular, we believe in providing educational opportunities for children to celebrate our rich and diverse culture,” said Dee Taylor, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-Atlantic. “This program allows us to celebrate and reward children in our local communities for their artwork while honoring influential African Americans from the past and present.”

The top 10 finalists’ entries, which are chosen by a panel from the Boys & Girls Clubs, will be displayed at local U.S. Cellular stores so that the public can view and vote on the artwork. The top three winners will receive prizes in the form of gift cards, with first prize being $500 and recognized at a special event in March.

“We are very excited to have an advocate and partner in U.S. Cellular to celebrate Black History Month.  This contest provides the perfect opportunity for our Club members to research African-American leaders and use their creative skills to depict one of their favorites through a drawing,” said Laurie Gibbons, spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Club.

Last year more than 230 of our club kids participated in the contest before narrowing the field to the final ten contestants whose artwork was displayed in U.S. Cellular stores. Last year’s winner was Allison Faulkner, a 5th grade student from Bonsack Elementary School Boys & Girls Club.

This year, the public is invited to stop by U.S. Cellular stores to vote for their favorites Feb.1 through Feb. 29, 2012. For more information about U.S. Cellular, visit any retail store, uscellular.com or U.S. Cellular’s Facebook page.
